About Ocún
The success story
The success story of the Czech climbing equipment expert began in 1988 when Pavel Hendrych, later to become the founder of Ocún, started making climbing harnesses in his spare time. He sews the first models on an old foot-operated sewing machine belonging to his great-grandmother. He dyed the harnesses in a pot in the kitchen. At the time, he used discarded brake parachutes that he had brought back from his military service as raw material. A few years later, Hendrych gave up his job as a design engineer in the automotive industry and devoted himself entirely to developing climbing equipment. Together with his friend and climbing partner Evgeny Ovchinnikov, he founded the company Rock Pillars. The Czech climbing shoe company's first model was the "Feather" climbing shoe, which was launched in 1992. It has a new type of sole developed by Rock Pillars, which is 4 mm thick at the heel and is therefore ideal for the so-called heel hook, a modern climbing technique for overhangs. In 1989, Hendrych founds the sister company Ocún and introduces the first climbing harness series. Ocún also launched a product that was still quite unusual at the time: a bouldering mat - an elementary piece of equipment for bouldering, which was still new at the time.
Over the next few years, Ocún continued to develop both the bouldering mat and climbing harnesses and established itself on the climbing equipment market. At the same time, sister company Rock Pillars continued to develop its high-quality climbing shoes, which also won numerous awards. In 2014, Rock Pillars and Ocún were merged into a single company and continued to operate under the name Ocún. Ocún now combines the climbing shoe know-how of Rock Pillars and the expertise in climbing harnesses, climbing equipment and climbing clothing in one company.
FAQ
Climbing shoes for beginners or professionals?
Ocún is primarily known for its high-quality climbing shoes. The makers of Ocún had already made an excellent name for themselves in the climbing scene with their predecessor company Rock Pillars, which they are now continuing under the new joint company name Ocún. Ocún's climbing shoes range from comfortable all-rounders for beginners to highly technical competition shoes. A comfortable all-round climbing shoe from Ocún, for example, is the Strike QC, which can be worn comfortably all day and has a sporty character thanks to its slight asymmetry. For the most demanding competition and performance climbers, Ocún has the Ozone climbing shoe in its range - a competition climbing shoe with a unique, innovative design. The Ocún Ozone is highly asymmetrical and anatomically shaped. This enables a very precise hold on the smallest footholds, ledges and holes. In addition, it is equipped with the so-called 3-Force-System, a proprietary development by Ocún, which prevents the problematic twisting of the climbing shoe on the inner edge and ensures better power transmission via the tip of the shoe.
WWhat technology is used in the climbing harnesses?
Ocún can also draw on over 20 years of expertise in the field of climbing harnesses. Ocún climbing harnesses are light, robust and equipped with all kinds of innovations. For example, all Ocún climbing harnesses in the Webee series are now equipped with patented 3D foam technology, which increases the air permeability of the material and improves other functional parameters of the climbing harnesses. The weight is also reduced through the use of foam technology, making the Ocún climbing harnesses comparatively light while maintaining high performance.
What climbing hardware products does Ocún manufacture?
Ocún introduced its first carabiner series in 2012 and has been steadily expanding its range of climbing hardware ever since. Today, in addition to innovatively shaped carabiners, Ocún's range also includes quickdraws and belay devices, all of which are manufactured in the Czech Republic in the usual high Ocún quality.
What distinguishes the climbing clothing?
Climbing equipment naturally also includes the right climbing clothing, and Ocún also has a selection of functional clothing that is perfectly optimized for climbing. This includes, for example, climbing pants made from particularly hard-wearing and stretchy materials, sporty hooded jackets that offer plenty of freedom of movement thanks to elastic materials and quick-drying climbing T-shirts in a simple Ocún design.
