About Devold
The success story
It was 1853, when Ole Andreas Devold returned to his hometown Ålesund after completing his industrial apprenticeship in Germany. With great joy and healthy optimism, Devold was convinced to sell his home-knitted underwear and mittens to fishermen and workers in the harsh Norwegian climate. With the most modern machines available at that time, he embarked on the adventure and established his first textile factory. The fabrics had to be durable, protect the wearer from the unpredictable elements of the Norwegian west coast, and be suitable for any use. Devold recognized early on the key to success: to combine quality and innovation in the garments. Not for nothing can Devold be called a wool pioneer of modern times.
Expedition adventurer in the 19th century
In 1888, expedition traveler Fridtjof Nansen crossed Greenland on skis. Even then, he relied on Devold wool underwear. In the vastness of the eternal ice, extreme weather and environmental conditions prevailed. Nansen owed his life to the high-quality functional clothing. Between 1911 and 1933, polar explorers Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth set out for the North and South Poles. On their expedition they were also equipped by Devold. For over a century now, Devold has been keeping Norwegians and non-Norwegians warm. The wool fibers deliver quality at the highest level and meet the highest requirements in terms of functionality and comfort.
FAQ
Where does the wool come from?
Wool is a wonder of nature. Devold has been working with these fibers for over 165 years. The claim of the Scandinavian brand is sustainable wool production. That's why 100% of the organic merino wool comes from Patagonia in Argentina, New Zealand and Australia. The farms are carefully selected and guarantee fair husbandry practices of the sheep. They operate in an extremely sustainable and particularly environmentally friendly way, and cruel practices that were once carried out, such as mulesing, have now been completely eliminated. The partner farms have been working with Devold for several generations and are bound by long-term contracts that provide them with security. The animals live on pastures where no pesticides or fertilizers are used. The flocks of sheep are out in the wild all year round and are supervised by a gaucho - an Argentine shepherd - for example. The wool is then transported to Europe, where it is processed in Devold's own factory.
How can I be sure that the sheep are treated well?
The quality of the wool is directly related to the management of the sheep. Devold also knows this. That is why the brand ensures that the five freedoms for animal welfare are followed on all farms. These include:
- Access to fresh water and a healthy diet
- Providing a proper environment by providing a comfortable resting area and shelter
- Ensuring sheep do not suffer from pain, injury or disease through prompt diagnosis and treatment
- Providing adequate space and suitable facilities
- No anxiety and stress caused by treatments in case of mental suffering
The controversial practice of mulesing, which refers to the removal of the skin around an animal's tail without pain relief, is not performed on any of Devold's cooperating farms. So that the wearer of the functional clothing can be sure of this, certificates confirming that this method is not used on the sheep are included.

What distinguishes merino wool?
Merino wool is especially popular among outdoor athletes. And rightly so. Because this type of wool holds some advantages during sweaty activities:
- Thermoregulation: supports the cooling of the body
- Odor neutrality: wool fat prevents bacteria from multiplying
- Wearing comfort: scratch-free wool
- Insulation: warms in cold and cools in heat
- Easy care: self-cleaning properties
- Natural UV protection: UV protection factor up to 40+
- Flame retardant: flammable only at a temperature of 560° Celsius
- Crease-resistant: no ironing or smoothing necessary
- Natural and sustainable: a raw material from nature
Merino wool is nature's functional fiber and is a far more beautiful alternative to fabrics of unnatural origin. Convince yourself of this and be prepared for the next outdoor activities in the highest degree. The merino expert Devold knows what it's doing and definitely lives up to its pioneering role.
What is the idea of the "Sheep to Shop" program?
In 2017, Devold launched the "Sheep to Shop" program. This is a promise of full wool traceability and total transparency throughout the value chain. Thus, the buyer of a Devold product can trace the origin of the wool processed in his garment back to the farm. Half of all products already have a small label sewn into them from the farm where the wool fibers come from. In this way, Devold wants to ensure that the Scandinavian classics are made with respect for animals and the planet. Thus, the owner of the pieces can wear them with pride and a clear conscience.
